Before sending an SMS message to any UK subscriber we currently perform a HLR lookup, which means that we can tell in advance what network any given subscriber is on. This allows us to make cost savings on sending SMS messages depending on which network the subscriber is on, for example, one provider may have a special deal on the Three Network.
In the UK, there is a system of number portability, so that anyone can keep their own number, when moving network, from O2 to Orange, as an example. Other countries don't have this ability, We've compiled a list of these here: http://www.envoyezsms.com/download/MCC%20codes%20with%20prefixes.xls
Verifying the home network of a person is one thing, but verifying their identity is something completely different. For example, if a user joins your online video rental club, how can you be sure their contact details are correct, that the mobile number they provided on sign-up was not 'invented'.
This is where premium SMS mobile phone validation comes into play, If you send the user a message via our reverse charged SMS API (http://www.freebiesms.co.uk/developers.aspx), this will not cost you anything, and you include in your message, a validation number, if they enter this number back into your website, you can be sure they owned the mobile.
Plus with our coverage of 11 countries, and growing, you can be sure you can welcome even international subscribers.
If you're interested in this, then let us know, and we can help with the technical implementation.
